Shortly describe your project
We began by educating students about healthy snacking at school. Our school cafeteria has already switched to products that fully comply with food regulations, and it’s encouraging to see that students continue to line up for healthy treats and unsweetened drinks.
We also created an edible school garden where students grow ingredients used directly in the school kitchen. It’s wonderful to see that they recognize the salad bar is filled with produce they planted, nurtured, and harvested themselves.
Our garden operates with two composters, and in the future, we aim to add organic waste from the school cafeteria. We also plan to restart our vermicomposter, which would be managed by the students.
In the cafeteria, pupils can now serve themselves salads according to their preferences and appetite, helping us reduce food waste. This new system also gives the kitchen staff clearer insight into what students enjoy and what they tend to leave unfinished, which helps further minimize waste in the future.
Our goal is to involve students more actively in menu planning by encouraging communication with the cafeteria and helping them understand the concept of the legally mandated “consumer basket.” As part of our practical activities, we plan to cook seasonal dishes and create a small cookbook.
