Shortly describe your project

At our kindergarten, we have joined the challenge to reduce plastic waste. We have decided to strengthen the environmental habits of children and staff by consistently separating waste.

We have purchased plastic waste bins for our classrooms. When the children have yogurt for snack time, we wash the plastic cups after they have finished eating and put them in the container for plastic. We do the same with broken or damaged plastic toys – together with the children, we sort them and take them to the plastic waste container located in the schoolyard.

The cooks in the kitchen also separate plastic waste, such as Tetra Paks, food packaging, and other plastic packaging, which they then throw away in designated containers. We teach children what belongs in the plastic bin, why waste is sorted, and how they too can contribute to protecting the environment.

Activities we do at the kindergarten to separate waste:

  • We use colored bins to sort waste in the classrooms. Every day, the children put paper, plastics, and leftover snacks into the correctly labeled bins, which helps them naturally develop good habits.
  • We regularly play the educational game "Belongs – Doesn't Belong." We show the children various objects or pictures and together we determine which bin the waste belongs in.
  • We use waste material for creative activities. We create various pictures, joint projects, or teaching aids from cardboard, rolls, caps, or plastic packaging. • We collect plastic caps. The children bring them from home, we sort them, and together we watch as the collection gradually fills up.
  • We sort bio-waste from fruit and vegetable scraps. After snack time, we collect the leftovers in a bio-waste container and, if possible, use them in the school compost.
  • We educate children in a positive way through stories and short videos about recycling. We watch stories about how to sort waste properly and what happens to recycled materials.
  • We participate in Eco Day in the schoolyard. Together with the children, we collect rubbish around the school and sort it into the appropriate containers.
  • We involve parents in collection and recycling. Parents bring us clean packaging, cartons, and lids, which we then use for creative or educational activities.
