Educational Project: Beeswax Food Wraps - Reducing Plastic Waste
Project Overview
With fourth-grade students, we implemented a hands-on sustainability project combining practical skills development with environmental awareness. During craft lessons, students created reusable fabric food wraps coated with beeswax as an eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastic bags.
Project Implementation
Phase 1: Baseline Assessment Over a one-week observation period, we monitored students' lunch-packing habits, systematically recording the number of plastic bags used daily for food storage.
Phase 2: Hands-On Creation Students crafted their own beeswax wraps during practical lessons, learning about sustainable materials and developing fine motor skills while creating a functional product they could use immediately.
Phase 3: Behavior Change & Impact Measurement Following the production phase, we tracked the adoption rate of beeswax wraps and measured the reduction in plastic bag consumption. Data was collected at multiple levels:
- Individual classroom usage
- Grade-level statistics
- Whole-school impact assessment
Learning Outcomes
This project integrated environmental education, practical craftsmanship, data collection, and behavioral science, empowering students to become active participants in reducing plastic waste while developing quantitative analysis skills through real-world measurement and comparison.
