Shortly describe your project

As part of our project to reduce food waste at school, we will first observe how much food students throw away after snack time or lunch. For a few days, we will track which foods are most often left on plates.

Students will work with teachers to consider why this happens and how we can improve the situation. Based on our observations, we will create posters with various motivational messages reminding students to take only as much food as they can eat and not to throw food away unnecessarily. We will hang the posters in the cafeteria and in the school hallways. We will also set up a special food-sharing corner in the cafeteria. If someone doesn’t want to eat a certain food item, such as fruit or a packaged piece of bread, they can leave it in a special spot where someone else can take it later. This way, less food will be wasted. We will also talk to the cooks and ask them which foods are left over most often and whether students could sometimes be given a smaller portion and ask for seconds if needed. Students will also think about how we can reuse food scraps. We’ll discuss what we can make from leftover bread or fruit, and learn that some scraps can also be used for compost, which is useful for the school garden. At the end of the project, we will again observe the amount of food waste and check whether we have managed to reduce it.

Through this project, we will encourage students to handle food responsibly and to reflect on the fact that food is precious and should not be thrown away unnecessarily.
