The Survival Project: Can I Grow My Own Food?

Each student got a young plant to care for until harvest. The challenge is to keep them alive and to care about them In addition, they should document the process. With this challenge students are encouraged to recognize how valuable food is and to reflect food waste.

A Suggestion for the Journal

To make the "value of food" reflection really hit home, you could have the students calculate a "Labor Cost" in their journals.

Instead of just recording growth, they could track:

1. Time spent: How many minutes total did they spend watering/weeding?

2. Emotional Investment: On a scale of 1–10, how worried were they when a leaf turned yellow?

3. The Result: If the plant dies or the harvest is small, they reflect on what that would mean if they relied on it for survival.
