At our nursery school, we have long promoted a responsible approach to food and strive to reduce food waste. We teach children to be independent, respect food and care for nature. We try to limit leftovers and handle food in an environmentally friendly manner by taking the following steps:
- The children prepare their own morning snacks – they choose the size of the bread and the amount of spread, which they spread themselves. This teaches them to estimate their needs and avoid unnecessary food waste.
- The children help themselves to fruit and vegetables according to their taste and appetite. Having a choice makes them more receptive to new flavours and reduces the amount of unwanted leftovers.
- The children put leftovers suitable for organic waste into the organic waste bin themselves. This is a natural way for them to learn the basics of waste sorting and caring for the environment.
- Although children do not choose their portions at lunch, we encourage them to try new foods and have an open discussion with them about how it is not necessary to finish everything on their plates, but that we should try not to waste food.
