At our school, we have noticed that students sometimes leave food on their plates, turning edible food into waste. As we are trying to reduce these amounts and want prepared meals to be eaten rather than thrown away, we have found some simple ways to take at least a small step towards this goal. During Children's Week, our students use ballots to write down their favorite meal—for lunch or dinner. We include their favorite meals in the menu for that week, so they mostly eat their favorite meals during that week, which results in less food waste. We implement a similar practice throughout the school year. Each week, one class or group of the kindergarten chooses a dish for the menu in advance – for example, this week, the 8th grade chose Monday's lunch. This selection is also recorded in the school and kindergarten menu.
